On 5 June 1940, the Germans launched their second major offensive of the campaign against a severely weakened French army. The fighting on the Somme and the Aisne was of great intensity before the attacker's numerical and material superiority forced French troops to fall back gradually.

On 13 June, Weygand — whose obsession was to save whatever could be saved of the French Army — issued a general order to retreat. One might think the campaign was over, but that was far from the case: fierce fighting would continue on the roads towards the Loire, before Verdun, in the Saar and on the Rhine.
For twelve days, the struggle also raged between the advocates of continuing the fight — led by Reynaud and de Gaulle — and the supporters of an armistice led by Weygand and Pétain. The fall of the Reynaud government on the evening of 16 June would seal the fate of the campaign in France.
Twelve dramatic days to be discovered in this 400-page work, richly illustrated with numerous previously unpublished photographs.
