17 June 1940: while the French Army, in accordance with the orders issued by Weygand on 13 June, was in full retreat towards the south-west and the Germans, having grasped the scale of the movement, were in pursuit in order to, as per Hitler's directive of 14 June, "destroy the French Army", the new head of Government, Marshal Pétain, delivered a radio broadcast in which he uttered that ill-fated phrase: "We must cease fighting." A blunder that the Germans would attempt to exploit in order to induce French troops to surrender. This did not prevent those whom Roger Bruge called "Les Combattants du 18 juin" from courageously continuing the fight south of the Loire, along the Marne–Rhine Canal or on the Maginot Line. The same was true on the Alpine front, which saw the failure of all Italian attempts to claim territories to be acquired during the armistice negotiations. It is the eight final tragic days of that campaign that this book sets out to bring back to life, along with the lessons to be drawn from those last engagements.
