In 52 BC the Gallic uprising led by the Arvernian Vercingetorix broke out. The first months of the war were a succession of skirmishes, with Vercingetorix conducting a form of avant la lettre guerrilla warfare. Julius Caesar decided to seek a decisive victory by attacking the capital of the Arverni.

The fighting, somewhat disjointed, ended in an undeniable Gallic success, forcing Caesar to strike camp. Vercingetorix set off in pursuit, but his cavalry was destroyed by the Germanic troops and he took refuge at Alesia, awaiting a relief army. This relief army was defeated by Caesar before Alesia, and Vercingetorix was compelled to surrender.

Gaul would become Roman.
