4 July 1759: « I arrived at Versailles on the 1st of July and learned on dismounting that the order for the review had been given for the 4th. On that day, at noon, the entire royal household was drawn up at the Trou-d'Enfer at Marly. There was our company of chevau-légers, the gendarmes, the mounted grenadiers, the two companies of musketeers and the four companies of bodyguards, all in full dress uniform and most wearing new clothing. This general review takes place only every four years.

The troops were drawn up in a single line, the bodyguards on the right according to their privilege, the musketeers in the centre, and the gendarmes and chevau-légers on the left. Each corps being at full strength, it was a gathering of nearly three thousand men, among the finest troops in the world ».

It is the history of the Gendarmes and Chevau-légers that Michel Hanotaux shares with us in this new volume of the Compagnie d'Elite series.
