All things considered, la Royale has only four centuries of history, having emerged at the beginning of the 17th century within the framework of France's policy of power and influence, conceived and developed by Richelieu. Over those four centuries, the French navy not only sailed and explored every sea and ocean on the globe, but also fully mastered the three dimensions of its own environment, thanks to the unprecedented evolution of surface fleet capabilities, as well as submarines and, finally, naval aviation aircraft.

Likewise, while the defence of ports and coastlines was long achieved by adapting citadels and coastal batteries to the threat of direct attack, the development of a blue-water navy for power projection drove the creation of vessels, troops, armaments, and even specific tactics for naval combat or amphibious operations and conquest conducted in distant theatres, requiring the securing of staging posts and maritime routes.
