The Guides of the Imperial Guard 1852-1870

« He who has not seen the regiment of the Guides has seen nothing », James de Chambrier could write in 1904. The memory of the Guides is linked to all that is most magnificent in the Second Empire, to that ceremonial splendour of which the reign of Napoleon III provides a last display.

It is less through their combat record than through the regiment's close association with the person of the sovereign that the Guides owe their place in History, and only the Cent-Gardes can claim as eminent a position. The Guides do not owe it to any particular status — unlike the Cent-Gardes, who were part of the Emperor's Military Household — but to a prestigious precedent: that of Bonaparte's guides who became the Chasseurs à cheval de la Garde. This legacy was above all shrewdly captured by Comte Fleury. An unconditional Bonapartist, a protagonist of the coup d'état of 1851 and an intimate of Napoleon III, the future colonel of the Guides would be the instrument of a grand design: to re-establish around his regiment an Imperial Guard as soon as the change of regime was completed.
