Born in Rennes in 1898, this son of a Breton civil servant prepared from adolescence to enter the École de Saint-Cyr. Graduating on 17 August 1918, he would be engaged on every theatre of operations without interruption.

From the First to the Second World War, through the desert, Charles Le Cocq fought relentlessly: the recapture of a village under German machine-gun fire in July 1918, a confrontation with Mauritanian rebels in 1932, rallying to Free France, resistance against Japanese forces in Indochina… Only a bullet to the heart, on 11 March 1945, would finally stop his "very fine conduct under fire".

This life in the service of France, this courage, these martial virtues earned him the honour of being made a "Companion of the Liberation".
