Compagnies Franches de la Marine - René Chartrand
The soldiers and officers of the Compagnies franches de la Marine took part in an immense number of engagements both "at sea and on land," as indicated by the flags of their corps.
They are the brothers-in-arms of sailors, buccaneers, coureurs des bois, soldiers of the metropolitan army's troupes de terre, those of the Compagnie des Indes, indigenous warriors and militiamen.
The present study is possibly the first to address all of the Compagnies franches de la Marine, both in America and in France, as they constituted a unique corps with a single commander — the King — and a single organisation within the Ministry of the Marine, divided into several elements and establishments according to the widely varying needs in Europe and America, and identified by a common uniform for all.
