It is 1799 when the 76th demi-brigade d'infanterie, then part of the Army of Helvetia under General Masséna, lost its colours in the engagement at Sernft against the Austrians. Later incorporated into the VI Corps of the Grande Armée, the 76th Line Regiment, commanded by Colonel Faure-Lajonquière, fought at Elchingen on 14 October 1805, a victory that would earn Ney his title of Duke. And it was under the orders of the Duke of Elchingen that it was sent to the Tyrol, where it took part in the defence of Bolzano on 18 November and where its colours were recovered at the arsenal of Innsbruck.

How did Charles Meynier depict this feat of arms? Who was Dominique Vivant-Denon, the patron who commissioned the work? Without forgetting the infantryman of 1805, through whose efforts victory followed victory. All these themes are examined in this second issue of the Compagnie d'Elite series.
