Édouard Detaille embodies, single-handedly, the military painting of his era — that of the first forty years of the Third Republic.

He bore witness with his brush to the hardships and greatness of his fellow soldiers of 1870. His immense talent is placed at the service of the cult of the French soldier, dominated by the heroic figure of Emperor Napoleon.

This book presents a sweeping panorama of a century of military glory as seen through the painter's eyes. Numerous previously unpublished works illustrate the breadth of his inspiration.

A great artist, a man of the world, and founder of the Musée de l'Armée, the man Detaille is portrayed here with passion and erudition. Justice is done to his work, which takes its rightful place in the history of French art.

François Robichon, born in 1954, is a specialist in historical and military iconography. In 1997 he defended a State doctorate on French military painting from 1871 to 1914.
