Major Horst Roos is one of the marshals of the Foreign Legion. Enlisted in 1951, he left active service after four decades under arms, by that point the most decorated non-commissioned officer in the French Army. He took part in the Indochina War and the Algerian War as a parachutist legionnaire, then as an NCO. His memories are those of a fighting man, from the rice paddies to the djebels. He experienced the stress of the operational jump at Nghia-Lo with the 2e BEP, the adrenaline of the battles of the Black River and Na-San. In Algeria with the 2e REP, there were the endless pursuits of the fellaghas through the djebels, the Battle of the Frontiers, the Challe Plan and the dismemberment of the ALN, the putsch and the bitterness of defeat. From all these experiences he forged a philosophy that guided him to the highest honours of the NCO corps, ultimately becoming president of the non-commissioned officers of the Foreign Legion. It is these memories — those of a young worker in a Germany devastated by the Second World War, but also those of a legionnaire involved in establishing the new world order of the 21st century — that Pierre Dufour has gathered and now brings to us.
