Targeted Killings - A Critique of Armed Liberalism
How is war waged in the 21st century?
Primarily by drones, by eliminating the enemy before he can cause harm. In Yemen, Afghanistan, Palestine or Pakistan, these operations known as "targeted killings " take place out of sight.
Initially widely condemned in Europe and across the Atlantic, these practices became normalised from the 2000s onwards in the context of the war on terror. Yet they call into question the traditional conception of legitimate violence in a democracy.
What arguments do governments — notably in Israel and the United States — deploy to justify this right to kill?
Combining fieldwork and research, Amélie Férey meticulously examines the processes of legalisation and legitimation of this undeclared war in democratic societies. The author discusses the arguments put forward by those who employ these killings: are they so different from political assassinations? Do they truly belong to the register of preventive war? Do they have a deterrent effect? Do they comply with the international legal framework?
Amélie Férey delivers here a decisive analysis for understanding the stakes of these practices, which are now an integral part of the contemporary strategic landscape.
