Bir Hakeim. The name rings out like a defiance. The victorious defence of Bir Hakeim by the Free French Forces marked a turning point in the history of General de Gaulle and the Free France movement, launched under difficult conditions in 1940. The military and political project had as its objective to return France to the war after the defeat of the French campaign — and to make that known internationally.

Constrained by their resources and, consequently, by the difficulties of winning recognition as an equal ally, the Free French had to wait two years before finally making their voice heard. The Battle of Bir Hakeim, as has often been said, showed that the French army had not died in 1940 and that it had reawakened the occupied French. The book aims to revisit this history from various angles, from the account of the event to the memory of the event.

It places in perspective a reflection on the experience of war and the narrative of war, articulated around various complementary notions well known to historians: the event, the place of the individual within the battle-event, the long duration of the event, memory, and the interplay of representations.
