The spirit of sacrifice throughout history.

" Merde! The Guard dies and does not surrender ". The famous retort, attributed to General Cambronne at Waterloo, illustrates contempt for death and authentic sacrifice: that which consists in voluntarily giving one's life for a man, a cause, an ideology, or a homeland.

Contrary to what one might think, such cases arise quite frequently across the centuries: Thermopylae, Jewish Sicarii at Masada, the last Cathars, the Chouans of 1815, the Confederates, the samurai, the Communards, the Cristeros, the White Russian soldiers, South Vietnamese fighters, Kurdish women fighters, and many others besides, distinguished themselves in little-known or forgotten events — such as the Forest Brothers who fought the Red Army in the Baltic states after 1945. All of them, in a final act, left their mark on history and on posterity.

Under the direction of Jean-Christophe Buisson and Jean Sévillia, the finest historians and journalists recount the most striking episodes in contributions that combine rigorous research with genuine literary flair. The whole offers an original history of heroism across the ages.
