This work refers in a very factual manner to a now-controversial period in recent French history, namely that of colonisation. A catalogue of recruitment posters published elsewhere on many occasions and brought together here, it aims above all to serve as a witness to an era when the poster was one of the few mass communication tools capable of arousing, in this case, the interest of young Frenchmen. As the author of this work, a passionate devotee of graphic art and a collector myself, my aim is to show, over a relatively short period of recent French history (1900 to 1961), the evolution of the argument carried by the poster and of the graphic choices used to highlight it.
The work is therefore at once the product of a historian and the product of a lover of graphic art.

Having chosen to serve within the Marine Troops arm (formerly Colonial Troops) upon graduating from the École spéciale militaire de Saint-Cyr (Général DE GAULLE intake, 1970–1972), General (2S) Bernard BEHOTEGUY pursued his entire career in that speciality, in regiment and on staff, in metropolitan France and overseas (Senegal, Réunion, New Caledonia, French Guiana). With a passion for poster art, particularly the work of the 1930s (Art Deco), he is himself a collector and was able to assemble nearly twenty of the posters described here for his personal collection. General Bernard BEHOTEGUY's collection was acquired some years ago by the Marine Troops Museum in Fréjus.
