March 2024: commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Dien Bien Phu

The Indochina War has passed into history, as the last witnesses gradually leave us. On the initiative of La Sabretache, a military history society, fourteen veterans of the French Expeditionary Corps in the Far East recount their memories as soldiers.

They were then young officers or NCOs. Their perspective as junior leaders in close contact with the troops sets itself apart from official history and staff reports. They share their experience of combat in a context to which they had to adapt alongside their men, whose hardships they shared. They also offer the reflections inspired in them by these events, seen with the benefit of hindsight.

Their previously unpublished testimonies are accompanied by a rich selection of equally unpublished illustrations. These accounts have genuine documentary value. They address what directly affected the units during their operational engagements — their weapons and equipment — and on numerous occasions they shed light on a poorly understood aspect of the conflict: those Vietnamese who fought alongside the French army for the independence of their country.
