The Waffen-SS is one of the most curiosity-provoking subjects in military history. From a small, highly elitist Praetorian guard embodying concepts of Germanic "racial purity", it ended up drawing in approximately one million increasingly eclectic combatants whose military quality ranged from elite to mediocre and who, alongside remarkable troops, fielded units of killers.

This work presenting largely unpublished iconography will meet the expectations of the most demanding history enthusiasts, both for the exceptional quality of this iconography and for the uncompromising commentary that amply expresses the diversity of its aspects.

The chapters trace this history from the pre-war period to prisoner-of-war camps, taking in the Polish campaign, the war in the West in 1940, the Balkans, Greece, Barbarossa, and then various chapters on the war in the East as well as in Finland, the Balkans, and Normandy.

For each period, photographs have been selected and annotated to present their particular features, the officers and the units associated with each of them. Among the very numerous works devoted to this subject, this one answers many questions concerning the diversity of this force — it is an essential reference for an understanding of this history.
