« SELVA »: this small word of Brazilian Portuguese punctuates, day after day and year after year, the conversations of the legionnaires serving in the 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment, signifying by turns a word of thanks, a negation, a question, or concretely the acceptance of a received mission.

Is this merely a superfluous affectation, of little interest beyond underlining in everyday speech the exotic character of the Amazonian rainforest?

Or is it, more than a simple filler word, an idea too rich to be expressed by more learned terms: an idea encompassing the density and lushness of the equatorial forest — at once an obstacle and a companion to the men who strive to serve within it — and the spirit of sacrifice particular to those who know its cost and its hardships?

On the occasion of the celebration of its fifty years of deployment in French Guiana, the 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment is honoured and proud to announce the publication of a regimental book whose principal subject is the specificity of its presence since 1973: the equatorial forest. Selva!
