Following the analysis of operational strategy in Volume I on Manoeuvres, this Volume II examines the Napoleonic battle in all its dimensions, setting out its specific characteristics in relation to the linear battles that preceded it. Drawing on a comparative study of the course of the Empire's principal battles, it explains in particular how Napoleon developed a "sequential battle" — an ordered succession of tactical phases leading to the dislocation of the enemy's dispositions.

It also presents the role of the Emperor both in the preparation and in the conduct of battle. Finally, it examines Napoleonic propaganda, which sought to maximise the political returns of battle by systematising the use of all available instruments of communication.
