The political and social revolution of 1789 brought about an upheaval in the art of war, which reached full maturity under Napoleon I. The Emperor effected a synthesis between the theories of Enlightenment military thinkers and the early experiments in mass warfare conducted by the generals of the Republic. He stands at the origin of modern warfare. The Napoleonic Military Revolution presents, in an unprecedented manner, the innovations of Napoleonic warfare and explains the imperial victories. Through a thematic and cartographical approach, the reader discovers the workings of Napoleon's war machine and grasps the mechanics of his manoeuvres. Through the Emperor's correspondence and the testimonies of combatants, the reader also takes part in the work of the imperial general staff, rides with the aides-de-camp to carry orders, and marches into battle with the Old Guard. MANOEUVRES is the first volume of a trilogy that unlocks the various components of the Napoleonic military revolution.
