THE 11TH ZOUAVES IN THE 1939-1940 CAMPAIGN
AN EYE FOR AN EYE, A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH
At mobilisation, at the end of August 1939, the 11th Zouave Regiment was formed from reservists aged 24 to 30, in the Belley region. On 4 November it joined the 2nd DINA and trained behind the Maginot Line, then in the Valenciennes sector. This is where it found itself on 10 May 1940. Committed to the Battle of the Dyle on 14 and 15 May, it was rapidly pushed back by the Germans and fell back into France, towards Saint-Amand-les-Eaux, before attempting to reach Armentières and Dunkirk.
The Germans moved faster and the 11th Zouaves had to fight a hard battle at Oignies on 26 and 27 May. On 28 May, amid a large mix of troops, it reached Haubourdin but could go no further. It therefore took part in the defence of the town until 31 May, as well as that of Lomme and Lambersart. On 1 June, the 2nd DINA surrendered with full military honours. The 11th Zouaves provided a detachment for the march-past on the main square in Lille.
