The 9th Marine Infantry Brigade, a major formation of the French Army, celebrates its 80th anniversary this year and the 60th anniversary of its establishment in the Grand Ouest.

Heir to the "Blue Division" that had distinguished itself in 1870 during the fighting at Bazeilles, the 9th Colonial Infantry Division was established in North Africa in July 1943.

It took part in the liberation of France and was then engaged in Indochina from 1945. Placed in reserve in 1946, it was reborn as a Brigade in 1963 and has since participated in all of France's military operations: Chad, Iraq, Somalia, Rwanda, former Yugoslavia, Kosovo, Ivory Coast, Central African Republic, Afghanistan, Libya, Mali…

In May 2023, a symposium was held in Dinard, close to the very site of the brigade's headquarters, bringing together a panel of experts to consider the future of the 9th in light of its past. The originality of this gathering lies in its articulation of historical case studies with the most advanced prospective work: the Scorpion transformation, distributed command, lessons from the war in Ukraine…

The result is a unique work: in substance, because the analyses of historians and political scientists are complemented by the testimonies of participants; in form, because this living material is embedded in a rich iconography that gives full expression to the experience of the marsouins, bisons, bigors, sapeurs and transmetteurs de marine.

A graduate of Saint-Cyr, General Hervé Pierre commands the 9th Marine Infantry Brigade. He is the author of a doctoral thesis in political science on the strategic thinking of General André Beaufre and co-wrote Le Général Beaufre, Portraits Croisés (Pierre de Taillac, 2020).
