It was at the beginning of the 16th century that Basque craftsmen began making firearms. But it was not until the end of the 19th century that Spanish Basque gunmaking took off with the development of major companies such as that of the Orbea family.

The industrial revolution, the creation of new trades around small arms manufacturing, and the arrival of automatic pistols rapidly gave the Basque gunmaking zone around Eibar international standing. In the 1920s, talented industrialists established new factories in the French Basque Country that would leave their mark on the history of small arms through their output.

The authors, historians and specialists in small arms, take us through this human and industrial adventure in which companies that have left a profound mark on the history of global gunmaking came to prominence. This remarkable research work brings back to life an entire chapter of the industrial history of the Basque Country, little known or poorly understood until now.
