On 6 June 1944, several Allied divisions landed on five beaches in Normandy, facing static units posted in the fortified positions of the Atlantic Wall. Once secured, waves of infantry and vehicles poured ashore to establish bridgeheads, supported by a flawless logistics chain supplying the necessary provisions to these fully motorised infantry and armoured divisions. Only a single German Panzer division faced them on 6 June, equipped with outdated and heterogeneous materiel, as the others were far from the front and their movement was hampered by Allied air power, which held complete aerial supremacy.

During the summer of 1944, ten German armoured divisions ultimately fought in Normandy with tanks whose most modern examples were technically superior to those fielded by the Allies, yet far fewer in number. This is the paradox of an army that still relied on horses in the majority of its infantry divisions, and that operated large numbers of vehicles captured from defeated foreign armies.

The Allies, for their part, had large quantities of new, standardised vehicles, a great number of which were operated by the Americans, who also supplied their Anglo-Canadian and French allies. The best example is the American M4 Sherman, built in 50,000 units up to 1945, compared to the workhorse of the Panzerwaffe, the Panzer IV, built in 9,000 units….
