1940.

Refusing the armistice requested by Marshal Pétain following the country's collapse, General de Gaulle made a solemn appeal from London on 18 June to rally the French — military and civilian alike — who wished to resume the fight against the German invader. From November onwards, the small Free France army thus formed opened its recruitment to female personnel.

This work is intended as a tribute to the women who chose to enlist as volunteers over the course of the months, each of them bringing her energy to this force of reconquest destined to restore to France, supported by the Allied powers, its honour and its freedom.
