Portraits of nearly one hundred men named Companions of the Liberation, across the five départements of historic Brittany. It is the most prestigious title of the Ordre de la Libération, created by General De Gaulle during the era of Free France, in exile in London.

Completed after the war, it is a definitive list of 1,038 individuals, 5 French communes and 18 fighting units. Brittany holds the record for nominations to this coveted distinction.

Two places are honoured among them: the city of Nantes, for its 50 hostage-martyrs, and the Île de Sein. At General De Gaulle's call, virtually all the men of Sein of fighting age had chosen to join the Free French Forces — prompting that legendary remark from the General before his meagre troops in 1940, which counted so many men from Sein: "So Sein represents a quarter of France?"

Whether survivors of the war or honoured posthumously, this book draws the portrait of these heroes: men, women, and one child from Morbihan — Mathurin Henrio, killed in February 1944 by German soldiers. At the age of 14, he became the youngest Companion of the Liberation.
