It is very often forgotten, but the men of Commando Kieffer were not the only Frenchmen to have taken part in the Normandy Landings. On 6 June 1944, 38 French paratroopers jumped behind enemy lines or were delivered by glider. At dawn, 177 marine fusilier commandos were the first to set foot on Sword Beach, while at sea, twelve French vessels, carrying more than 2,600 sailors, took part in the escort missions and the bombardment of coastal defences. In the air, 227 French airmen were engaged in fighter sorties, bombing missions, or the laying of smoke screens to conceal the armada.

In total, more than 3,000 French servicemen took part in the operations of 6 June, and more than 20,000 during the battle that followed. Fifteen of these Frenchmen lost their lives on D-Day, and several hundred more in the fighting of the weeks that followed.

This book, the result of previously unpublished discoveries in French and British military archives, private archives and the accounts of witnesses, reveals for the first time the full extent of French participation in Operation Overlord.
