On 6 June 1944, the Allies landed on the beaches of Normandy. They would liberate Europe, but also leave a lasting mark on fashion and change the world's view of the uniform.


Leather jackets worn by US Air Force pilots, Navy denim clothing, cargo pockets on airborne troops… The American soldier fascinated with his "bad boy" look. The Allied generals also came to appreciate the importance of image and sartorial style in their public communication. Montgomery was never seen without his duffle coat, while Eisenhower projected a modern image with a jacket that would bear his name. In the Pacific, MacArthur appeared with his famous Aviator Ray-Ban sunglasses. General or ordinary soldier, the liberator charmed with his "look".

This work traces the origins of the "military" style by recounting the surprising history of the most iconic Allied uniforms, which over time became staples of fashion.
