Despite its very frequent association with the American company Willys-Overland, the Jeep was in fact designed by a team working on behalf of American Bantam, in response to a request from the US Quartermaster Corps issued in 1940. In the face of the machinations of a powerful political opposition, Bantam lost the contract to Willys-Overland and Ford, who ultimately produced approximately 640,000 examples of what remains arguably the most famous vehicle in the world, while Hotchkiss produced in France, well after the war, an additional 28,000 Jeeps.

During the Second World War, the Jeep served in all the Allied armies. Partially submersible Jeeps landed on D-Day in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. Under the extreme conditions of the Russian Front, they proved their effectiveness and earned the admiration of the Red Army. After the end of the war, thousands of Jeeps were allocated to the armies of the recently liberated European countries. Others were "civilianized", becoming genuine collector's items. In the 1970s, restored Jeeps appeared in numerous films, further underscoring the historic role the Jeep played in the Allied victory.
