On 6 June 1944, the Allies landed in Normandy. On 25 July, the Americans launched Operation Cobra, aimed at capturing Avranches. The first soldiers of General Patton's Third Army reached the gates of Avranches on the evening of 30 July.

On 22 June 1940, the armistice was signed at Rethondes. For four years, part of France was administered by the Vichy regime and the German army, which requisitioned public and private buildings. Locally, Mont Saint-Michel became a popular tourist destination for German soldiers on leave.

On 6 June 1944, the Allies landed in Normandy. On 25 July, the Americans launched Operation Cobra, aimed at capturing Avranches. The first soldiers of General Patton's Third Army reached the gates of Avranches on the evening of 30 July. For nearly twenty hours, fierce fighting took place at the Pont Gilbert, at the Croix-Verte, along the Route de Quarante Sous and around Mont Jarry. These successive victories enabled the Allied forces to push forward and liberate the rest of the Avranchin.

To the east, from Brécey to Mortain via Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët, the Americans pressed on with the liberation of southern Manche. But they ran up against German troops who were preparing the Mortain counter-attack. At dawn on 7 August, Operation Lüttich was launched. Over six days of fighting, the Americans gained the upper hand and definitively liberated the Mortain area.
