The Battle of Omaha holds a prominent place in collective memory because of the tragic hours that unfolded there on 6 June 1944. The Utah sector, situated at the base of the Cotentin Peninsula, has received less attention.

Wrongly so. By General Eisenhower's own admission, the mission of Force U was the most complex and most hazardous, owing to the beach's remoteness and the presence of numerous German divisions.
The 4th Infantry Division, the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions had to fight hard to secure the Utah sector. The casualty figure — 3,500 men in total — demonstrates that the Battle of Utah deserves fresh examination.
