We follow Lieutenant Allsup from the beaches to Hill 108, the "Bloody Hill" where he would be wounded, but also Lieutenant Jones, who would be among the first to enter Saint-Lô — pulverised by bombs and turned into the tomb of hundreds of Normans. We also follow their adversaries, the formidable "green devils" — the German paratroopers of General Schimpf — on the trail of paratroopers Erwin Schmieger and Rudi Frühbeisser, through a bocage landscape, a veritable green hell that they turned into a fortified camp where every hedgerow had to be taken at great cost. This work is a day-by-day account that takes us along little-known or entirely unknown paths, from the terrible beaches of Omaha to Trévières, La Cambe, Isigny, through the Aure valley and on to Hill 108, "Purple Heart Hill," from the fortified strongpoint of Carillon to Hills 192 and 122. This historical work is also a powerful human testimony and a genuine field guide, complete with maps and comparative photographs taken in 1944 and today. This book is a historical document for the sake of remembrance.
