Drawing on a collection carefully preserved over decades, every aspect of the Heitai's daily existence is presented in detail with magnificent colour photographs accompanied by descriptions. Items are classified from weapons to clothing (tropical and polar), taking in rations equipment, communications gear, decorations, helmets, insignia, optical devices, gas masks, canteens, cameras, tents and footwear.

Also included are the propaganda posters and reading material provided to the Heitai during the long quiet periods of service, isolated on the islands of the Pacific.
By studying the Japanese soldier's equipment — from dagger to toothbrush, from grenade to underwear — we can gain a far deeper understanding of these soldiers' lives than cinema or a written account could ever convey. At the same time, it is illuminating to observe the differences between the kit of an Imperial Army combatant and that of a GI, and how, in many cases, they are remarkably similar.


Like the indispensable companion volume to the essential Landser, this immense and exceptional work on the Imperial Heitai provides a unique insight into the Japanese combatant who was, in his time, America's most formidable enemy.

This volume is the equivalent of the Collector's Guide (US) for the Japanese soldier of the Second World War.
