The final act of the 2. Panzer-Division's engagement at the heart of the Battle of Normandy begins on 13 August 1944, in Volume III of the three-volume series on the German armoured unit.

The transfer between Alençon and Argentan plunges the unit into the exhaustion of its combat strength over a week of dramatic retreat. After the illusions of counter-attack and the hopes of holding on in Normandy, Kommandeur von Lüttwitz must now avoid the destruction of his Panzer-Division in the encirclement of the Falaise-Argentan Pocket.

The unit's losses on the banks of the Dives are heavy, but the 2.Panzer-Division manages to break out of the Kessel and cross the Seine at the end of August 1944. A slow retreat begins towards the German border, ahead of an indispensable rebuilding of a severely weakened unit.

In this Volume III, Falaise and Retreat, Frédéric Deprun develops over 320 pages the chronology of the week of fighting in the Falaise-Argentan pocket and the withdrawal routes towards Rouen and Germany, drawing on testimonies, maps and numerous previously unpublished photographs.
