Volume II of the three-volume series covering the fate of the 2. Panzer-Division during 1944 and the Battle of Normandy traces the unit's fighting from 1 July to 12 August.

Von Lüttwitz must organise a war of position against the 1st US Infantry Division at the foot of the Caumont ridge, and manage the deployment of his Panzer forces to the west and south of Caen against the British. But the defensive constraints on the German forces demand mobility, and the Wiener Division must shore up the Saint-Lô front line, which is crumbling at the end of July 1944. The unit, weakened by these hard-fought engagements, is committed on 6 August as the main element of the German counter-attack towards Avranches.

The failure to advance in the Mortain sector condemned the Panzergrenadiere to fierce resistance in order to prevent total collapse.

Frédéric Deprun, with 2. Panzer-Division, Tome II, Caen-Vire-Mortain – 1er juillet–12 août 1944, reconstructs in 300 pages the atmosphere of the fighting in Normandy through hundreds of previously unpublished images, numerous maps and illustrations, leading from the plains of the Calvados to the gates of the Falaise-Argentan Pocket, setting the stage for Volume III.
