Too often reduced to an improbable naval construction programme dictated by Hitler, Plan Z nonetheless has origins predating the Third Reich and would undergo many strategic and technical evolutions before the Nazi dictator took a genuine interest in it. The fact remains that Plan Z would shape the Kriegsmarine throughout the 1930s, giving it the strengths and weaknesses it would carry into the opening of the Second World War. Why did Germany commit to such an ambitious and costly programme? How, and with what human, industrial and technical resources? And to what end, in service of what naval strategy? What was the Plan Z fleet supposed to look like, and what was ultimately achieved?

In this compelling work, Pascal Colombier answers all these questions, offering at last a comprehensive and accessible history in French.

The first part examines the context and the various factors that drove the Germans to develop this programme.

The second examines the evolution of the many technical and strategic choices that such a plan imposed. Finally, a last section details all the classes of vessels envisaged: Type H battleship, Type O, M and P cruisers, aircraft carriers, U-Boote, etc.

The whole is richly illustrated with period photographs and numerous plans and 3D views of the most iconic planned vessels of the unrealizable Plan Z.
