1940-1944: Footwear under the Occupation

The necessity of clothing oneself led to the creation of items made from substitute materials. Footwear also underwent spectacular transformations, born of constraint and improvisation.
How did people find footwear under the German Occupation? The ingenuity and originality of this era of shortage are revealed through the exceptional collection of the Musée des Métiers de la Chaussure. Wooden soles, cork heels, ribbons, fabrics lined with rabbit skin… all became fashionable by necessity and reveal, on the feet of the French, the full resourcefulness and originality of this period of scarcity.
This book reveals models as intriguing as they are atypical, and in doing so uncovers a whole dimension of the daily life of French men and women under the Occupation.
