As soon as the British departed, the "skippers" discovered their mission in Operation "Neptune" (the code name given to the Allied troop landings in Normandy).


The crews are assembled. The men learn that they will be the first Frenchmen to contribute to the Landings. Many of these sailors who came from France to take part in the largest naval operation of all time had joined de Gaulle in Great Britain. Some, however — beginning with their commander Admiral Jaujard — were more reluctant towards the general.


It is the story of these ships and these men that forms the heart of the book. Among them, Querville with his submarine La Junon, which landed a commando in Norway tasked with blowing up a heavy water plant; or Levasseur with the Aconit, which sank two U-boats in twelve hours.


The participation of the French sailors is rarely, if ever, mentioned when the anniversaries of the Normandy Landings are celebrated. It is high time to right the injustice done to these men, their vessels and the French Navy.
