In the early hours of 6 June 1944, 177 naval commando riflemen, under the command of Philippe Kieffer, landed at Colleville-sur-Orne. Their mission was to take the town's casino, converted into a bunker, and neutralise the German defences. By the evening of 6 June, the French unit of No. 4 Commando had suffered heavy casualties.

Nearly a quarter of the unit was no longer fit to fight. Ten men were killed. They came from all walks of life and all social backgrounds, but were all driven by the same conviction: to restore honour to France.

This book traces the journeys of those 10 commandos who fell on the field of honour, at Colleville-sur-Orne and Ouistreham, during the morning that changed the course of the world.
