The siege endured by Leningrad (formerly Saint Petersburg) for nearly 900 days (1941–1944) at the hands of the Germans and their allies is one of the darkest episodes of the Second World War. The Nazis applied a policy of annihilation there, claiming at least 1.8 million victims, half of them civilians. The besieged found themselves confronted not only with Nazi barbarism — with its daily bombardments — but also with the coercive environment of the Stalinist regime. Their fight for survival took place under the constant pounding of enemy artillery, in conditions of extreme famine, thirst, darkness, and isolation.

Long censored by Soviet propaganda yet still mythologised in Putin's Russia, which frames it as a heroic fresco, this tragic episode is highly revealing of the tensions surrounding the memory of the war in Russia. Sarah Gruszka, who devoted a monumental thesis to the subject, offers us an unprecedented approach: beyond the military events and the strategic questions of this deadly siege, she analyses, drawing on personal diaries, the lives, emotions, hardships and hopes of the besieged themselves.
