From 20 November 1953 to 7 May 1954, French aircrews were progressively pushed to — and beyond — the limits of human endurance. Without the crews of the Armée de l'Air, the Aéronavale, the Aviation Légère d'Observation d'Artillerie, the requisitioned civilian airlines, and American pilots who were heirs to the Flying Tigers, the entrenched camp at Diên Biên Phu could not have survived and fought on.

Beyond the frequently poor meteorological conditions over northern Vietnam, they had to contend with an aggressive and deadly enemy anti-aircraft defence. The airstrip, neutralised from the very first days of the attack by Viet Minh artillery, forced the Dakotas and Flying Boxcars to conduct assault resupply missions under conditions more difficult than at Stalingrad, while fighters and dive-bombers pressed their attacks against the numerous guns and machine-gun positions.
