The genesis of the Mirage 2000 is rooted in the continuation of development work on the last experimental prototypes from Avions Marcel Dassault, particularly the Mirage 4000. The Mirage 2000, whose first prototype flew in 1978, has formed the backbone of French combat aviation since 1984, with five different variants operated by the Armée de l'Air. These variants of the Mirage 2000 have fulfilled multiple mission types, both on national territory and during numerous exercises and overseas operational theatres.

Drawing on the geopolitical and military context of the various periods concerned, the evolution of air strategic doctrines, the needs of the Armée de l'Air and the demands of the State, this reference work gathers and traces the development and history of the Mirage 2000 variants in the Armée de l'Air — covering their genesis, history, detailed technical design, operational use, operational career and assigned squadrons — drawing on a significant number of previously unpublished photographs and illustrations.
