The air war over the Ardennes: from Antwerp to Bodenplatte

On 16 December 1944, the most powerful artillery barrage the forces of a dying Third Reich would ever unleash on the Western Front — opened with the Normandy landings six months earlier — fell upon the American lines holding the thinly manned Ardennes front.

In its wake was to pour the most powerful armoured force the Germans had ever concentrated for an offensive on this front — all of it sheltered by a low cloud ceiling that shielded the precious panzers of the 6th and 5th Panzer Armies, driving towards Antwerp, from the full might of Allied air power.
A low ceiling…
And yet… The aerial battles that were to take place above the Ardennes, or triggered by the ground battle unfolding there, need not envy the superlatives of the land fighting: massive engagements on both sides, tactical and strategic support, bombers and jet fighters, drops of men, food and ammunition — successful, botched or impossible…

The skies over the Ardennes wrote a major chapter in the history of aerial warfare, and it is that chapter we propose to recount in the pages that follow.
