The names of Generals Dupas, Dessaix and Chastel are engraved on the pillars of the Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile. Recognised under the First Empire for their military merits and heroic acts on the battlefield, held in esteem by their soldiers as well as by Emperor Napoleon I, they have nonetheless fallen into obscurity. Even in Savoy, from which all three originated, their memory remains little known.
The Musée de la Ville de Thonon-les-Bains holds an exceptional collection of uniforms, weapons and objects that belonged to these three officers — first cousins who began their military careers under the French Revolution within the Légion des Allobroges. The present work proposes, drawing on analysis of the preserved artworks and objects connected to these generals, to trace their careers and to highlight their qualities as commanders in the exercise of command — precepts which still constitute, today, the foundations of an officer's moral character.
A set of detailed catalogue entries completes this approach, allowing the full richness of this unprecedented museum collection to be discovered.
