As the Polish winter rages, Napoleon is in pursuit of the Russians under the command of the timid Bennigsen. The latter seeks to protect the city of Königsberg and retreats before the French. During the combat at Hoff, the French heavy cavalry distinguishes itself in particular; then the combat at Ziegelhoff, before Eylau, is but a prelude to one of the most terrible battles of the Empire. On 8 February 1807, the French and Russian armies face each other before the small town of Preussisch-Eylau. Though outnumbered, the French resist the power of the Russian artillery. The valour of the troops of Davout's III Corps, the mortal heroism of Augereau's VII Corps, and the great cavalry charge led by Murat and Bessières are the defining episodes of this battle, whose course was far more complex than it might appear. The battlefield, located in the Kaliningrad enclave and long closed to visitors, rightfully takes its place among the "forgotten battles".
