August 1424. After an hour of fierce fighting, twelve thousand combatants lay strewn across the plain a few hundred metres from the small Norman town. The Lombard-Hispanic-Scots-French army, commanded by Archibald Douglas, newly created Duke of Touraine and in the service of Charles VII, had just suffered a terrible reverse at the hands of the English host of the Duke of Bedford, regent of France for King Henry VI. This work retraces the three years during which several thousand men-at-arms came from Scotland to secure the surprising victory of Baugé and to suffer two terrible defeats at Cravant and Verneuil. Verneuil, sometimes called the second Agincourt, is one of the bloodiest battles of the Hundred Years' War; it marks the end of the massive Scottish engagement on the Continent in that conflict.
