Memorial Guide to the Battle of the Vexin 1944 - 2024
On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Landings and the Liberation, this guide — intended for walkers, curious hikers and history enthusiasts — sets out to present the memorial sites of the French Vexin connected to the Second World War.
Located close to Paris, they were the theatre of events linked to the Occupation and the Liberation. Around twenty sites tell their story through period images set alongside contemporary photographs, in which the significant transformation that followed reconstruction can be clearly read.
After the "Phoney War", the campaign of 1940, and four years of Occupation, the Battle of the Vexin broke out at the end of August 1944, at the very moment Paris was being liberated — a period of around ten days during which American troops were forced to slow their advance. It proved exceptional in the scale of the confrontation: Tiger and Sherman tanks clashing in the only armoured battle to take place in the Île-de-France region, as well as in the numbers of combatants on both sides and in the aerial engagements, with a tally of nearly 50 aircraft crashes. The battle claimed approximately 2,000 civilian and military casualties.
