The Hartmannswillerkopf is a massif dominating the Alsatian plain that was, in 1915, the scene of fierce fighting between French and German forces. This iconic site of the Great War is sanctified by the sacrifice of thousands of soldiers from both sides. One of France's four national war memorials was built there. No book had previously retraced, in text and image, the four years of war at the Hartmannswillerkopf.

It presents the doctrines prevailing before 1914 in the fields of mountain warfare and siege warfare, and offers a comprehensive panorama of the battlefield and its organisation as the struggle evolved. Several chapters examine in detail the operations of 1915, during which each side fought fiercely for possession of the mountain summit. The operations of 1916 to 1918 are the subject of original new developments, including accounts of little-known episodes such as the terrible gas warfare at the end of 1918. This work of military history, written from French and German sources, is published to mark the centenary of the battles in Upper Alsace.

Biography of Thierry Ehret

Thierry Ehret is the author of several publications on the Great War in Alsace and on the Hartmannswillerkopf in particular. His book draws on numerous previously unpublished historical and iconographic documents.
