Most often deployed in line with the purpose for which it was created — mountain warfare — it moved from one front to another according to strategic priorities. From the many journeys it made across Europe and the numerous theatres of operations in which it was engaged, it drew its flattering reputation as an elite unit. Its adaptability and offensive potential led to its occasional use outside its usual operational role, which is why it sometimes appeared on the Western Front.

In particular, its name is associated with the final German attempts on the right bank of the Meuse in 1916: there it endured a true ordeal, and before Verdun, over three months, its losses exceeded its initial strength. This book, written from sources and a bibliography drawn essentially from foreign origins, is abundantly illustrated, notably with photographs that belonged to officers of this formation, including the commander of the Alpine Corps himself. 192 pages, 21cm x 25cm, softcover.

The authors: Jean-Claude LAPARRA, general (2e S.), doctor of history from the Université de Paris I-Panthéon-Sorbonne, is the author or co-author of some twenty works and around sixty articles on the First World War. He endeavours, in particular, to present the organisation and functioning of the German army and to offer a view of "what was happening on the other side." Patrice LOISELEUX-RAMOS specialises in the study of the German army between 1871 and 1918, including units that were stationed in Alsace-Lorraine. Having already contributed to the work of several authors, he joined forces with Jean-Claude LAPARRA to produce this book.
