In September 1941, the Forces Aériennes Françaises Libres assigned the names of occupied French provinces to their combat units. Bomber Group No. 1, just formed from the Reserve Bomber Group No. 1 (a veteran of Kufra and Abyssinia), thus took the name "Lorraine". Equipped with Bristol Blenheim aircraft, it took part in Operation Crusader in Libya against German and Italian forces.

Repatriated to England in early 1943 and equipped with Douglas Bostons, the "Lorraine" was then committed to low-level bombing raids, the destruction of V-1 launch sites, and operations during the Normandy Landings. A few weeks before the end of hostilities, it was finally re-equipped with the North American Mitchell to carry out its last combat missions over Germany.

Page by page, we follow the unit's airmen into combat from the Kufra oasis to the ruins of Nazi Germany. Featuring more than 300 photographs, 12 colour profiles and 10 maps, this work gives pride of place to the testimony of the airmen themselves.
